Nigerian music legend Wande Coal is back with KING COAL, the album fans have been waiting for, and it shows once again why he’s one of the most important and lasting names in Afrobeats.
So much of what we now call Afrobeats owes a huge debt to Wande Coal, and on his fourth studio album KING COAL, the singer shows the world what timeless music sounds like. In many ways, the album is the peak of Coal’s talent and approach as he moves easily between the R&B, dancehall and fújì foundations that make up Afrobeats at its core, while putting his thoughts on love, legacy and growth front and centre.
Throughout the project, Coal reworks the storytelling tension that drove his 2023 album Legend or No Legend, sounding, at last, like he’s comfortable with his status as one of the genre’s most important figures. On “Regard“, he’s firm about getting the respect he deserves wherever he goes, reinforcing that demand on the rags-to-riches track “Balenciaga“. “So many hits came out of me,” he sings. “I’m the one they want to be.” Even the playful “DEM GO PAY“, built on current drill-style production, offers quiet reminders of the singer’s influence and connections.
Given Wande Coal’s reputation as an elder statesman, a lineup of stars appear on KING COAL. Tiwa Savage shows up on “Must Be Love“, and Wizkid brings serious energy to the mara-influenced closer “Oshe“. But Coal sounds most natural when he’s working with another group of talented Afrobeats artists. His connection with Qing Madi reaches new heights on “DEARLY“, and he sets things up perfectly for BNXN and Ruger on the smooth “GBESUNMO“. Also pulling their weight are Dera, who brings a clear street-pop vibe to “MONEY“, and Fido, who adds a fun energy to “Sure for Me“. 17 years after Coal’s studio debut Mushin 2 Mo’ Hits opened new doors in Afropop, KING COAL is a reminder that he’s still calling the shots from the top.
